Islamic Family Law Study Program: Featuring Speakers from Four Countries, ICOLESS 6 Becomes a Forum for 65 Academic Papers
SHARIA – On Wednesday and Thursday, September 6-7, 2023, the Faculty of Sharia held its annual international conference at the Rayz Hotel in Malang. The sixth International Conference of Law, Technology, Spirituality, and Society (ICOLESS) focused on the theme “Family Resilience and Digital Economic Transition in the Global Recession Era.”
The event was officially opened by the Rector of UIN Maliki Malang, Prof. Dr. Zainuddin, M.A. The conference featured speakers from Turkey (Dr. Busra Nur Duran, Ondokuz Mayis University, Samsun), Malaysia (Dr. Mohd. Norhusairi bin Mat Hussin, Universiti Malaya), Saudi Arabia (Prof. Dr. Fahd bin Mohanna bin Salim al-Ahmadi, Islamic University of Medinah), and Indonesia (Prof. Dr. Sudirman, M.A., UIN Maliki Malang). ICOLESS 6 began at 9:00 AM WIB in a hybrid format, with 85 participants from various institutions attending in person at the Rayz Hotel, and the rest joining online via Zoom. A total of 65 papers were submitted to the ICOLESS committee and discussed during the conference, covering legal issues aligned with this year’s theme.
On September 6, Prof. Dr. Fahd bin Mohanna bin Salim al-Ahmadi and Prof. Dr. Sudirman, M.A., presented materials focusing on Islamic Family Law. They specifically addressed the complexities of family issues, such as financial support. While Prof. Fahd focused on these aspects, Prof. Sudirman concentrated on the discussion of hereditary waqf, another strategic issue in Islamic Family Law.
Following the keynote presentations, parallel sessions began at 1:00 PM WIB, featuring 65 papers. These sessions were divided into five hybrid rooms, with some participants joining online via Zoom and others attending in person at the Rayz Hotel.
On the second day, Dr. Busra Nur Duran and Dr. Mohd. Norhusairi bin Mat Hussin delivered their presentations. Dr. Busra focused on the issue of sexual violence, often affecting women and children, within the context of Sharia Economic Law. Meanwhile, Dr. Mohd. Norhusairi discussed joint property within Muslim families.
This year’s ICOLESS differed significantly from previous years. Unlike previous years, where the committee did not provide discussants for professional commentary on participants’ papers, this year five academics from various institutions and universities, who also serve as journal editors, were present to offer insights. The five discussants were Dr. Lukman Santoso, M.H. (IAIN Ponorogo); Ayub Susan Ningsih, S.H., LL.M., M.H. (Universitas Negeri Semarang); Zulkarnain, S.H., M.H. (Universitas Widyagama); Rachma Indriyani, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D. (Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta); and Dr. Ahmad Siboy, S.H., M.HI. (Universitas Islam Malang). “Alhamdulillah, we hope every event runs smoothly! This year’s ICOLESS was full of challenges. We not only needed to ensure the participation of the speakers, but for professional purposes, we also brought in discussants to provide academic feedback on the 65 participant papers. This was not an easy task. However, if made a tradition, this approach will be very functional and contribute greatly to the academic context. Oh, yes! I would also like to thank the entire committee and everyone who supported this event,” stated Risma Nur Arifah, Chair of the sixth ICOLESS.
