Sharia Faculty Hosts the Chief, Secretary-General, and Judges of the Constitutional Court

SHARIA – On Saturday, June 4, 2022, the Sharia Faculty of UIN Maliki Malang held a guest lecture event titled “Bringing the Constitution to Life for the Millennial Generation.” Conducted in a hybrid format at the 5th-floor Auditorium of the Ir. Soekarno Building, UIN Maliki Malang, and via Zoom meeting, the event was solemnly held from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM WIB.

The event featured Dr. Anwar Usman, S.H. (Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia) and Prof. Dr. M. Guntur Hamzah, S.H., M.H. (Secretary-General of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia) as keynote speakers. The Sharia Faculty bridged the gap between academics—both lecturers and students—to enrich their understanding of the constitution and to instill it in the millennial generation.

The event was opened by Prof. Dr. Umi Sumbulah, M.Ag., Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at UIN Maliki Malang. It featured one of the Constitutional Court judges, Prof. Dr. Enny Nurbaningsih, S.H., M.Hum., as the main speaker. She discussed the current state of the Republic of Indonesia, linking it to predictions about the future, with the millennial generation being a key element in grounding the constitution. Specifically, she elaborated on the essential functions of the constitution, one of which is as a means of social control. Understanding the constitution is crucial for opening the gateway to constitutional awareness among millennials and efforts to bring it to life.

In addition to Prof. Enny, Dr. Zaenul Mahmudi, M.A. (Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at the Sharia Faculty of UIN Maliki Malang) also served as a speaker and presented the material “Customary Justice System: Alternative Justice for Indonesia’s Multi-Ethnic Society.” In his presentation, he provided various examples of the application of the constitution in the context of courts that often intersect with certain ethnic or cultural peculiarities. He championed the concept and program of “justice for all,” which is the target of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for 2030. He argued that Indonesia needs to prioritize the common law system over civil law to be relevant to Indonesia’s multi-ethnic society.

The event was attended by 125 offline participants and hundreds of online participants via Zoom. Participants showed great enthusiasm for the guest lecture, as evidenced by the responses from students (not only from UIN Maliki Malang) during the discussion session. During the event, the inauguration ceremony of the Moot Court Corner by the Constitutional Court was also held. Dr. Anwar Usman, M.Ag., accompanied by the Constitutional Court team, visited the Moot Court Corner for the inauguration.
